We give back to the community through donations, in-kind contributions and the volunteer efforts of our people. Our strategy involves supporting programs that are consistent with our values and business objectives, provide opportunities for our employees to be involved, and meet the needs of the communities where we have a presence.
Our community investment program is focused on four pillars of support:
We donate to causes that further medical research, treatment of illness and well-being. This includes funding research that focuses on finding the causes of disease as well as how to effectively treat it.
Enerplus hosts the annual Legends of the Oil Patch Texas Hold’em Charity Poker Tournament to raise funds on behalf of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation (ACHF). Since beginning the tournament in 2006, Enerplus has raised over $1.3 million by bringing together senior executives from the energy industry to try their luck in poker against some true oil patch legends. Enerplus works with the ACHF to identify a particular area of need where the tournament contribution will be directed every year. In 2011, Enerplus helped purchase high-definition endoscopic cameras that will help increase surgical accuracy while minimizing surgical invasiveness. By minimizing invasive surgery, the time children need to stay in hospital is reduced, as is the pain medication required getting them back to normal activity much faster.
Having raised over $150,000 to date, Enerplus is the Easter Seals Camp Horizon Drop Zone Challenge top sponsor in Alberta. Every year, an executive faces their fears to scale down the side of a building in an effort to raise funds from employees, colleagues and friends for the Easter Seals Camp Horizon facility located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. All funds raised go to the camp which offers specialized programs for children with cancer, cerebral palsy, diabetes, kidney impairments, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, learning and other disabilities.
Since 2006, Enerplus has sponsored the Tour for Kids Cycling challenge, adding our energy to this important initiative. We are proud to sponsor an event where 100 percent of donations go directly to the charity and is supported by volunteers. Each year, our executives and employees ride up to 200 km in a day raising money for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation. This adventure take riders beyond personal distance accomplishments by raising funds to help bring joy to children caught in the fight against cancer.
We sponsor education initiatives in areas of interest to our business. By contributing to education initiatives, we can play an important role in promoting the skills of young people and supporting a strong future for our industry.
In 2006, Enerplus established a partnership with SAIT Polytechnic to create the Enerplus Innovation Centre, a new centre in the Trades and Technology Complex that specializes in applied research and innovation. The Enerplus Innovation Centre will help meet the applied research needs of the energy, manufacturing and construction sectors; helping them be even more successful in both regional and international markets.
Located at SAIT Polytechnic’s new Trades and Technology Complex, the Centre provides students with expertise that extends beyond its walls through the established relationships SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation department has developed with other academic institutions, companies and associations, adding energy to the entire province and beyond.
